Vows that Wow!
Do you remember your wedding vows? Some of you may have even written your own. I'm sure that somewhere in your vows you promised to give your love and affection only to the man of your dreams. My husband, Terry, and I have been married for over 25 years, and he's my best friend and a wonderful life-long companion. We have lots of fun together and, along with our children, laugh a lot.
Unfortunately, there are and have been many in the Body of Christ who have parted ways and broke their promises to the one they vowed to remain with for life. Terry and I have often asked ourselves, "Why is it that we have remained faithful and happy?" So I thought I'd share a few of the principles that I believe have helped to keep us happy and fulfilled in our marriage:
- Spending quantity time together
- Continually complimenting each other
- Encouraging each other
- Laughing a lot and having fun
- Guarding our hearts and minds
- Always treating each other like we're best friends
Your husband may not be perfect, but so what? Neither are you! Treasure him as a gift from Father God, who loved you so much that He created someone just for you. Right now, drop everything you're doing and go tell him how much you love and appreciate him. Hold him in your arms and squeeze hard. Lavish him with an affection that only his lover can give. (That's you!) "My lover is mine, and I am his" (Song of Songs 2:16).
My mother once did something very unusual for my dad that I've never forgotten. She packed a suitcase with all his belongings, went to his workplace and kidnapped him. Yes, kidnapped him in pure daylight! They ended up staying the evening away from home and having a wonderful time. He was shocked, but in a very pleasant way. And they've been married now for almost 60 years.
Today, encourage the man of your vows. Love him and make him feel super special. If you'll focus on doing this every day, your vows will be wowed for years to come.
